You can do better next time maybe start by trying not to copy a Disney plot. Sorry, "Secret Life." You didn't pass the sniff test. But, speaking as an adult who loves childish things, even I would pass up this movie if it were caged in the local shelter in favor of something a little cuter and a little more spirited. "The Secret Life of Pets" certainly isn't a flea-bitten mongrel by any means it has an appeal for the younger among us. With "The Secret Life of Pets," the overly-simplified animals and super-safe story line left the whole thing feeling rather dull. Both of them told quality, touching stories and used amazing animation to drive them home. Movies like Laika's "Kubo and the Two Strings" and Disney's "Big Hero 6," for example. There is an array of beautiful and original animated films out there. It features an amazing cast, including Kevin Hart, Lake Bell, Jenny Slate, Albert Brooks, Bobby Moynihan, Steve Coogan and the incomparable Dana Carvey, and it's already been green-lighted for a sequel. By all accounts, "The Secret Life of Pets" was one of the top-performing films of 2016, raking in more than $368 million in theaters, grabbing an A- on Cinema Score, and earning a Certified Fresh rating of 74 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Maybe I'm looking for reasons to dislike it. Perhaps I'm reading too much into the simple script. The two must then join forces to find their way back home. Max begins thinking of ways to get rid of him and eventually finds a way to get Duke successfully out of the picture, but he accidentally gets himself lost as well. Max's owner, Katie (Ellie Kemper) brings home rescue dog Duke (Eric Stonestreet) one day, much to Max's dismay. When their masters are out of sight, the animals begin doing things one wouldn't expect of house pets – behaving more like humans. Max (Louis C.K.) is the top dog in his apartment building, which includes a diverse menagerie of pets sporting a variety of silly quirks.
